How to reasonably use the discharge parameters and processing control for mirror machining

2025-08-04

The treatment method of the working fluid during mirror finishing is also very important. Generally, oil immersion processing is sufficient, keeping the working fluid at the processing area in a slight circulation state. Strong flushing must never be used, as intense flushing action will interfere with the normal formation of the micro-discharge process.

Mirror EDM processing uses negative polarity machining. The selection of some non-primary electrical parameters is also very important and differs somewhat from conventional processing. For example, the discharge time should be set longer, the lift height shorter, and the lift speed should not be too fast. These settings aim to maintain a stable low-energy electro-erosion process because mirror finishing itself does not produce many electro-erosion products, and overly frequent lifting actions will interfere with the continuous and stable discharge.

The electro-erosion capability of the electrical parameters in mirror finishing is very weak, and the processing takes a long time. Since dimensional changes during mirror finishing are already very small and only serve a polishing function, the process can actually end once the required surface roughness is achieved. Therefore, the timed processing function of CNC EDM machines can be used, with the processing duration determined based on experience.

Based on processing experience, as long as each processing step is handled properly, carbon buildup generally does not occur during mirror finishing. Therefore, the machine should be stopped as little as possible during processing, especially avoiding cleaning off the powder and ink layer left on the workpiece surface.
